Are You Thinking Of Divorce? Save Your Marriage By Talking To A Marriage Counselor
If you are feel that your marriage is in the rocks and contemplating a divorce, perhaps you could consider talking to a marriage counselor. There are many marriage counselors out there who are trained to assist you to save your marriage.
The question is which marriage counselor is a good one? Here are a few tips to consider if you are looking for a family therapist or marriage counselor.
1. First things first is the credentials of the marriage counselor. There are basically three different classes of counselors as follows:
- The first type is a PhD or Psy D level counselor.
These counselors have spent at least five years at graduate school and done at least 3000 hours of therapy while being supervised by an experienced psychologist.
In order to qualify legally as a “clinical psychologist”, a person needs a doctoral level degree. A counselor with a Ph.D is often more academic and does forensic and scholarly work besides therapy.
- The next type is M.S.W. which stands for Master of Social Work.
Social workers typically work with individuals or in institutions and are trained to apply social theory to different situations.
- The last type is the M.A. or M.S. in counseling.
These are often known as Marriage and Family Therapists and they can only work in small group counseling situations or with individuals. On average, they would have gone for at least two years of study to earn a degree and worked for a minimum of 1500 hours of therapy sessions under experienced supervision.
In terms of cost, a Marriage and Family Therapist (M.A. or M.S.) and Social Workers (M.S.W.) are the least expensive options for therapy. Insurance companies would normally direct you to them if you are claiming it on your insurance.
2. Once you decide on what type of therapist you will see, then the next thing is to figure out their charges.
As mentioned, Marriage and Family Therapists are the least expensive. However, if you really want to save your marriage, the lowest option may not always be the best.
Also when looking at costs, don’t just consider the cost per session but also the expected length of treatment as this can make a huge difference to your overall costs.
3. The next step is to evaluate the therapist’s policies.
Consider the following factors:
a) How much you have to pay if you miss a session?
b) If you go on a holiday, do you still have to pay for the session for that week?
c) Does your therapist do house calls or only at the office? Also do they accept calls outside your normal scheduled session times?
d) Is there someone else you can talk to in an emergency?
Essentially, a good family counselor has one goal in mind and that is to help you save your marriage.
Indeed, if you are seeing a counselor and you don’t fell that they are dedicated to assist you to save your marriage, then move on and find someone else.
There are so many good counselors out there that can help you save your marriage from divorce so don’t just go for divorce without giving therapy a chance.
